What Does EMRA Do For Me?

EMRA sends representatives to such medical specialty organizations as the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American Medical Association so your views and concerns can be presented directly to members of these important organizations. Specifically, we offer representation to these organizations:

  • Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine (RRC/EM)
  • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
  • American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)
  • Council of Residency Directors (CORD)
  • ACEP Academic Affairs Committee and many other ACEP committees
  • Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) Board of Trustees
  • ACEP Council Meeting (four voting members)
  • Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM)
  • Liaison with student and house staff organizations such as the American Medical Association Resident /Fellows Section (AMA/RFS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)

Career Development
Each year, EMRA offers seminars to help prepare our members for the future. Whether you're a medical students applying to residency or if you're a resident looking for a job, our seminars will help you reach your goal. EMRA also publishes many articles in EM Resident and our website that help residents and medical students find success in their careers.

Networking Opportunities
Through our Residency Fair and Job Fair, EMRA provides tremendous networking opportunities for medical students and residents. These are held each year at Scientific Assembly and are free to our members. This past year, EMRA hosted approximately 100 residencies for our Residency Fair representing almost 75% of all residencies in the country. The Job Fair also hosted around 115 organizations looking for future emergency physicians. These organizations included academic centers, contract management groups, democratic groups, hospitals, and fellowships.

Leadership Opportunities
EMRA has been a leader in emergency medicine for over 30 years. EMRA can provide you with tremendous opportunities for leadership and service. Each year, EMRA holds elections for its Board of Directors and Representative Council Vice-Speaker. In addition, there are several committees for which you can serve as a member or even vice-chair. EMRA also hosts the Chair's Challenge each year to help residents attend the ACEP Leadership and Advocacy conference. We also appoint a Legislative Advisor annually to sit on the Board. In cooperation with ACEP, EMRA also assists in choosing resident leaders to serve on ACEP Committees. There are many other opportunities, so please let us know if you want to serve.

Community
For the past 30 years, EMRA has been the gathering place for residents from across the country. All emergency medicine residents share common stories and experience and EMRA provides a common place to come together. Particularly, EMRA hosts a huge party twice yearly as an opportunity for residents and students to socialize and have fun. Through all the hard work and time spent at the hospital, we hope to provide some respite.

Medical Students
EMRA Medical Student Governing Council
The Medical StudentGoverning Councilhas developed goals and objectives that are in addition to EMRA's specific goals and objectives. The MSGC focuses strictly on the medical students who indicate they are working toward a specialty in emergency medicine. The MSGC chair also sits on the EMRA Board of Directors to offer even greater medical student input. The MSGC also:

  • Educates medical students about the specialty of emergency medicine and its importance to the practice of medicine in this country.
  • Provides information to those students interested in emergency medicine regarding career options and emergency medicine training programs.
  • Develops a network of physician advisors for third- and fourth-year medical students who may not have access to role models in emergency medicine.
  • Establishes a peer network for medical students aspiring to careers in emergency medicine and allows them the opportunity to assume leadership roles in organized emergency medicine.
  • Provides ACEP and SAEM with a resource for dissemination of materials and information to medical students and training institutions.
