EMRA Wellness: New Year, New You!

The new year is upon us, and that means many of us will be setting goals for the new year. That's great! Goals are an important part of wellness.

Whether professional or personal, New Year's resolutions can be difficult to stick to. Why? Most people are really ambitious! And while it's commendable to set the bar high, it's easy to get discouraged when you, for instance, set out to run a marathon, but haven't run a mile in years.

Another downfall can be broad or vague goals, like "get fit!" or "save money!". Goals are typically easier to achieve when you set detailed milestones for yourself - like "run 5 miles per week" or "save $100 per month".

As an example, if your big-picture goal is to get fit, set small monthly or even daily goals for yourself. Remember, it's helpful to be specific! So if you're starting to exercise for the first time in months or years, a reasonable goal would be to "run 3-4 times a week by the end of the month" or "run 1 mile by the end of the month". Don't be afraid to take baby steps and adjust your goals monthly as needed. Soon, you'll be on your way to running that marathon in no time!

Happy new year from your EMRA Wellness Committee!
