Side Effect of Disasters: An Outpouring from the EM Family
Zach Jarou, MD (President-Elect)
Natural disasters wreaked havoc in the U.S. this year, and the emergency medicine community has responded true to form: by hurrying to help. When Hurricane Harvey and then Hurricane Irma engulfed entire communities in Texas and Florida, CORD immediately established a disaster relief emergency fund to which EMRA was quick to contribute; the fund has raised more than $26,000 to date.
As residents and faculty in the disaster zones gave up their time off to care for their communities, EMRA cared for the caregivers by sponsoring lunches at affected training programs. And as individual members of our EM family rebuild, EMRA will continue to be there for them by supporting Amazon Wish Lists to help them get back on their feet. Please connect with EMRA on Twitter and follow us on Facebook to participate in our Amazon Wish List outreach!
Additionally, we give a huge shout-out to all of the residents, faculty, emergency physicians and first responders on the ride-out teams, participating in volunteer efforts, and raising awareness of needs during this trying time. You are all heroes!

Wellness Tips & Tricks: Be Kind to Your Consults
Jayram Pai, MD (EMRA Wellness Committee)
As we roll into September, we start to finally cycle down from the panic of new interns being new interns. But what many struggle to learn is the art of calling a consult. So seniors, take the opportunity to teach this valuable skill (this includes you off-service rotators taking consults from our colleagues upstairs!). Rather than blow past the presentation you are given, take the extra time to show them exactly what they should be presenting. It might take an extra minute, but it pays off in the long run. And for the interns among us: Start with the specific question you are calling for, give a focused HPI, and follow it up with relevant patient info (hx, physical exam, labs/imaging). The art lies in being concise without omitting essential details. It's not as easy as it sounds, so focus on mastering this essential skill early. To make it easier to know what your consults need, visit the Consult Corner on emresident.org or watch this valuable Patient Presentation video for tips.
