Gillian Schmitz, MD, FACEP

Gillian Schmitz, MD (@GillianMD1) is described as a “mentor, role model, and friend to countless members of the emergency medicine community.” She holds academic appointments in the Uniformed Services University and at UT-San Antonio, while also serving as the Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center and on the ACEP Board of Directors.

Her nominators uniformly discussed how Dr. Schmitz mentors women in medicine and any resident or student with whom she interacts, inspiring thoughtful discussion about advocacy and leadership in EM. Summed up best, Dr. Schmitz “sets the example of what it means to be an influencer, clinician, educator, and leader in emergency medicine.” 

Over 400 applications were reviewed by the selection committee, comprised of Steven J. Stack, MD, MBA, FACEP, Zach Jarou, MD, Omar Z. Maniya, MD, MBA, Hannah Hughes, MD, MBA, Ven Subramanyam, MD, Erin Karl, MD, and Jazmyn Shaw.
