Join the EMRA Medical Student Council
The following position descriptions should help you get an idea of the responsibilities you will have in your coming year on the EMRA Medical Student Council (MSC). As you can see, the descriptions are short. There is so much more that you will be accomplishing as a member of the Council than just the summary placed here.
Applications are due November 1st, before midnight, Central time each year. Appointments are for a one-year term beginning January 1st and ending January 31st of the following year. Each position also includes funding to attend the a MSC Spring Meeting and ACEP Scientific Assembly, for in-person meetings of the EMRA MSC that occurs each year.

APPLICATION COMPONENTS
EMRA Membership: Applicants must maintain EMRA membership as of the application deadline and for their entire term, if appointed.
Letter of Intent: Please include the following information:
- Name, address, email, telephone, medical school, year of graduation, EMRA member # (if known) and position for which you are applying.
- What you hope to bring to EMRA and to the MSC during your term of appointment.
- Your anticipated availability to attend an in-person spring meeting in Feburary and ACEP's Scientific Assembly in October (to the best of your knowledge). The two main meetings of the medical student council will take place at these conferences.
- Please also indicate whether you would be willing to serve in a different capacity if you are not chosen for the position to which you are applying. For example, if you apply for West Regional Coordinator on the MSC and are not selected, we can consider you for a West Rep Position, but ONLY if you indicate that you would be willing to serve in another capacity.

Letter of Recommendation optional from advisor, faculty mentor, etc. Recommended but not required except for the position of MSC Chair (due to travel requirements).

Medical Student Council (MSC) Position Descriptions
Only returning MSC can apply for the Chair and Vice-Chair positions.
- Lead and manage the Medical Student Council, overseeing a 25-person team responsible for national initiatives, programming, and resources that support medical student engagement in emergency medicine
- Serve on the EMRA Board of Directors to represent medical student interests, attending all monthly conference calls and additional meetings as required by the EMRA President
- Coordinate and supervise all activities of the MSC, ensuring timely progress on projects, alignment with EMRA’s mission, and successful execution of annual goals
- Attend EMRA Board Retreat in January (4 days)
- Organize and attend the annual in-person MSC Spring Planning Meeting (end of January or beginning of February) to lead strategic discussions and establish the incoming council’s goals, initiatives, and priorities for the year
- Attend the CORD Academic Assembly in the spring to represent the perspectives and priorities of medical students applying to emergency medicine in national discussions on education and training (3 days)
- Attend the annual Leadership & Advocacy Conference in the spring to represent and advocate for medical student interests and the field of emergency medicine on a national platform (4 days)
- Attend and oversee the planning/execution of all EMRA medical student events at ACEP Scientific Assembly to support student involvement (8 days)
- Represent the MSC and medical student members at the EMRA Representative Council meetings
- Serve as the medical student voice of the organization
- Serve as medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee
- Assist the Chair with leadership duties and strategic initiatives
- Support the internal coordination and direction of the MSC
- Take detailed minutes during MSC meetings and conference calls and ensure timely distribution to all members
- Help organize and attend the annual in-person MSC Spring Goal Planning Meeting (Date TBD) to lead strategic discussions and establish the incoming council’s goals, initiatives, and priorities for the year
- Attend the CORD Academic Assembly in the spring to represent the perspectives and priorities of medical students applying to emergency medicine in national discussions on education and training
- Attend and assist with planning of EMRA medical student events at ACEP Scientific Assembly to support student involvement
- Serve as medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee
- Write, review, and edit the monthly medical student newsletter before distribution every 5th of the month
- Coordinate with other medical student council members to ensure their required newsletter articles abide by the yearly publishing schedule
- Coordinate with EMRA medical student members that want to produce an article for the monthly newsletter
- Provide general editorial assistance for policy statements, website updates, etc.
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- All Medical Student Council Members are expected to serve as a medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee and contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout their term
- Collaborate with EMRA Staff to produce medical student-focused content for distribution including but not limited to social media, email listservs, etc
- Submit all EMRA marketing requests on behalf of MSC and ensure that events are advertised on social platforms at least 2 weeks prior to event date
- Increase engagement with medical student members by implementing creative strategies such as social media takeovers, etc. to boost visibility, participation, and community connection
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- All Medical Student Council Members are expected to serve as a medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee and contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout their term
- Serve as the voice and advocate for osteopathic medical students on the Medical Student Council by representing their unique needs, challenges, and perspectives in the emergency medicine application process
- Organize and host at least two virtual advising sessions during your term that are specifically tailored to support and guide osteopathic medical students
- Foster relationships with additional emergency medicine organizations that support osteopathic medical students and explore collaborative opportunities to enhance resources, advocacy, and support for DO applicants
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- All Medical Student Council Members are expected to serve as a medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee and contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout their term
- Support efforts that encourage medical student engagement with health policy and advocacy issues of interest to the EMRA community
- Keep up-to-date on timely health policy issues and advocacy legislation and disseminate it to the medical student population, such as through composing regular health policy updates in the EMRA Medical Student Council newsletter
- Facilitate bi annual virtual Policy Writing Workshops and serve as a reference for medical students writing legislation to be proposed to Representative Council
- Organize internal MSC resolution reviews in collaboration with AMA-Reps
- Serve as a Medical Student Council liaison to the EMRA Health Policy Committee
- Contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout the term
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- Oversee the EMRA Resident-Student Mentorship Program by coordinating mentor-mentee matching and ensuring meaningful connections between medical students and resident mentors
- Collect feedback and develop outreach strategies to expand mentor and mentee recruitment
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- All Medical Student Council Members are expected to serve as a medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee and contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout their term
- Coordinate tasks requiring information gathering and dissemination to/from local Emergency Medicine Interest Groups (EMIGs)
- Provide oversight and guidance to regional representatives, assisting with assigned duties including EMIG outreach, WhatsApp community management, and annual check-ins with EMIG leaders
- Collaborate with regional representatives to maintain an accurate, up-to-date list of EMIGs via Constant Contact and other communication platforms
- Lead one EMIG Connect meeting per term as a primary organizer and speaker, and contribute to national outreach by writing one newsletter article and coordinating two program director interviews annually
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- All Medical Student Council Members are expected to serve as a medical student council liaison on an EMRA Committee and contribute to at least 1 MSC project throughout their term
- Serve as the primary point of contact and support for Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) leaders within the region, offering guidance, resources, and mentorship as they navigate exposure to emergency medicine and develop local initiatives
- Foster regional community and collaboration among EMIGs by maintaining active engagement through WhatsApp groups, encouraging inter-EMIG communication, and supporting shared events or initiatives
- Collaborate with regional coordinators to maintain an accurate, up-to-date list of EMIGs via Constant Contact, including outreach to underrepresented or hard-to-reach programs
- Coordinate outreach efforts and hold annual check-ins (virtual or in-person) with each EMIG, promoting EMRA resources, identifying areas for support, and encouraging involvement in national EM opportunities
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair

- Attend the MSS Annual Meeting and EM Section Council meeting before the AMA House of Delegates (usually in Chicago in June) and MSS Interim Meeting and EM Section Council meeting before the AMA House of Delegates (usually November, sites TBD)
- All Medical Student Council Members are required to attend the in-person Spring Goal Planning meeting, ACEP Scientific Assembly in the Fall, monthly MSC meetings, Spring and Fall Medical Student Forum, and other events as deemed necessary by the MSC Chair and Vice Chair
- Serve as a Medical Student Council liaison to the EMRA Health Policy Committee
- Represent the interest of medical students with respect to advising initiatives to committees/task forces as directed by the MSC Chair
- Lead and coordinate the EMRA Hangouts program, serving as the main point of contact and overseeing a team of two support members
- Identify, propose, and coordinate additional projects relying on current and vetted information to help medical students navigate the residency application process and begin developing a career in emergency medicine
- Coordinate and facilitate Program Director Interviews at the annual CORD Conference in the spring and ACEP Scientific Assembly in the fall
