  • To arrange active duty military rotations:
    • MOMMC Department of Medical Education
    • Email: emnellisclerkship@gmail.com
    • (702) 653-2499
    • The clerkship rotation is split between the base hospital and University Medical Center, where most of the residents work. In addition to arranging your clerkship with MOMMC, you will also have to apply to UNLV through VSAS. There is a $150 fee associated with rotating at UMC that is not reimbursed through your ADT, but it is worth it to rotate through UMC in the general ED, Trauma ED and Pediatric ED.
  • Strengths
    • Strong toxicology program with a block spent in Denver toxicology center.
    • EM residents staff the medical tent at festivals such as Burning Man as well as providing medical support for NHL Las Vegas Golden Knights games
    • Opportunity to work with PJs in addition to a tactical medicine day
    • Opportunities in Wilderness medicine, ski patrol and EMS
    • Strong focus on ultrasound
    • Primarily civilian EM program at University Medical Center, the largest trauma level I center in the region.
  • Housing
    • Housing is provided at the Nellis Inn.

San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC)

Last updated 6/2023

    • Strengths
      • Three-year program jointly sponsored by the US Army (8 residents per class) and Air Force (8 residents per class)
      • Largest MTF in the DOD.
      • Residency program is almost entirely in the MTF.
      • Interns receive all EMS patients and are at the bedside for all traumas.
      • The only Level 1 Trauma center in the DoD; additionally houses a burn unit, NICU, and multiple ICUs
      • Minimal exposure to the civilian sector of emergency medicine, although SAMMC does receive civilian traumas and emergencies.
      • 9 hour shifts.
  • Housing
    • SAMMC does not offer housing for ADTs. Once your ADT is confirmed, look into hotels for your stay. There is one hotel on “base” for SAMMC, and several just off base that are walking distance to the hospital. These are usually well below per diem rate. The per diem rate can be found at https://www.gsa.gov/travel/plan-book/per-diem-rates. Some students choose hotels in the downtown/riverwalk area, which are usually at per diem rate. These hotels include, but are not limited to (no compensation has been provided for mentioning these hotels):

      • Staybridge Suites - Downtown San Antonio
      • Holiday Inn Express and Suites – Rivercenter Area
      • Hyatt Place – San Antonio Riverwalk
      • Residence Inn – San Antonio Downtown
      • Comfort Suites – Alamo/Riverwalk
      • Spring Hill Suites – San Antonio Downtown
      • LaQuinta Inns and Suites - San Antonio Riverwalk
      • Best Western Plus – Sunset Suites/Riverwalk

Notes for SAMMC:

A lot of hotels will charge you per diem rate but provide extra amenities beyond the basics. Historically, some hotels have provided breakfast daily, dinner M-W, $25/week stay grocery store money, and compensated parking. Make sure to ask about possible military benefits when choosing a hotel.

Travis AFB/UC Davis

Last updated 6/2023

  • Interview scheduling
  • ADT request form
  • Strengths
    • The main hospital, UC Davis Medical Center, is the largest burn center west of the Mississippi river. It is the highest level of care for burn and pediatric care along the west coast and can catch patients from Mexico to Canada, including parts of Nevada.
    • As with most (SAMMC excluded) military treatment facilities, the ED at Travis AFB does not receive high volumes of sick patients. Therefore, residents do not spend any time at Travis AFB and spend all of their time at the civilian hospitals in the Sacramento area. This results in a high volume of critical patients, both in trauma and medical emergencies.
  • Housing
    • Medical students applying for EM residencies in the military match spend their entire rotation at UC Davis Medical Center. Medical students who are not EM-bound who are completing a required 4th year EM rotation spend their entire rotation on base at the David Grant Medical Center (and will stay at the Westwind Inn: http://af.dod lodging.net/propertys/Travis-AFB). No housing is provided at UC Davis, but recommended hotels can be found on the clerkship syllabus, and are listed below. You can also check the per diem rate for the area at https://www.gsa.gov/travel/ plan-book/per-diem-rates

      • Hotel Med Park - Sacramento
      • Courtyard by Marriott - Sacramento Midtown - recommended for its proximity to the Medical Center
      • Larkspur Landing Home Suites Hotel - Sacramento
      • Ramada Inn - West Sacramento

  • Interview scheduling
    • Go to https://wpafb.wrightschedule.org/ and click on EM clerkship schedule to see what time works for you! Note: you may have to open this in Internet Explorer or Safari. For the 2022-2023 season, in person and virtual interviews were offered.
    • In order to schedule, click on the calendar, then click sign-in which will take you to a page that will allow you to create an account.
  • ADT request form
  • Strengths
    • Strong exposure to the civilian sector.
    • Dedicated time at a children’s hospital.
    • Lots of time in the ICU.
    • Robust sim program and robust preparation for the inservice training exam and for boards. Usually above average on inservice exam across the board.
    • Free food on every shift.
    • Experience at a Trauma Level 1 center as well as a primary burn center.
    • The primary ED for the civilian blocks (Miami Valley Hospital) contains a pod for sick patients staffed entirely by residents.
  • Housing
    • ADT housing is primarily through the Wright-Patterson Inns. Once your ADT is confirmed, call 937-257-3451 to make a reservation. If they have no openings, you will likely be redirected to the Hope Hotel which is right off base. If they’re also full, you will have to find your own hotel and be reimbursed. Keep in mind per diem rates, and look for hotels near Wright-Patterson AFB Area A.

  • UT Health San Antonio will be offering two active-duty slots per year for their three-year residency program. Physicians applying for this program should apply through the Joint Service GME Selection Board, as well as ERAS. Interviews will be conducted and applicants will be contacted to arrange these interviews with residency leadership as well as our Chief Residents after submitting the military application, and ERAS. Medical students can apply for an MS4 rotation with this program as well - we recommend reaching out to the program directly for questions about how this process may differ for HPSP students!

  • Since this program is relatively new, we don’t have a lot of information about places to stay, or helpful tips yet - if you have rotated with this program, are completing residency with this program, or can offer any advice for hopeful students, please let us know so that we can update our website!

  • According to their website, interviews will be conducted virtually using Zoom, though this has not been updated since the 2021-2022 application cycle.
